Since its founding in 1996, Tocá Rufar has inspired thousands of people.
We designed a completely innovative teaching model, suitable for participants of all ages and without any experience.
All classes and workshops are taught by professional monitors, many of whom have learned to play and teach in Tocá Rufar.
Here, in Tocá Rufar, percussion is not just an activity, it is a way of being.

Art

Tocá Rufar is a model project of artistic and cultural formation for the affirmation and promotion of traditional Portuguese percussion and the bombo instrument that distinguishes itself by placing Portuguese culture, knowledge and art, in a privileged position as a source of value, of development and contemporary; and for making them accessible to all individuals.

Patrimony

The importance of the practice of Bombos, in Portugal, goes beyond its cultural aspect, integrating a very strong social component that has manifested itself over centuries of history and through its capacity of generational transmission and that unites citizens of the most diverse age groups, making it a driving force for many communities. Formation

Tocá Rufar accepts students of all ages with any level of musical training or none, who will be able to attend classes free of charge and evolve according to their personal goals, work capacity and talent. The teaching method used is based on the theory of learning advocated by Edwin Gordon. The students, whom we call Rufinas, begin by singing the rhythms through body movements and only later use the instruments. This process culminates in knowing how to do it directly without the need for written symbols (guidelines). This method also applies to groups of adults with the aim of promoting teamwork. AFTER ALL, WHICH EXAMPLE REPRESENTS TEAMWORK BETTER THAN AN ORCHESTRA? Under the dynamics of traditional Portuguese percussion workshops designed to convey specific knowledge and results that add value to your activity and organization, we complement training and other actions for work teams.
Teambuilding

Inclusion

Defining itself as an artistic and socio-cultural project, Tocá Rufar protects its players from social prejudices linked to their origin, age, gender, race, culture, sexual orientation, or others; investing in creating conditions so that any individual has equal opportunity to access and grow in the project and in society.

Performance

Orchestra players access places and contexts that most individuals cannot reach: they play alongside renowned artists such as Buraka Som Sistema, Fafá de Belém, Fausto, Jorge Palma, José Mário Branco, Mickael Carreira, Paulo de Carvalho, Tony and David Carreira, Xutos & Pontapés, naming just a few; they represent the country in international events as happened in several World Exhibitions, in the Signature of the Treaty of Lisbon or in the Big Bang Festival in Belgium.
